Echocardiography is a non-invasive imaging modality that uses high frequency sound waves to produce a dynamic visual image of the heart. This profession requires application of good judgment, and the ability to provide competent medical services to patients.

Echocardiogram Technicians are also known as Cardiac Sonographers and Cardiovascular Technicians. They are proficient in the use of sonographic equipment.

The Echocardiogram Technician program mission is to prepare competent entry level Cardiac Sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains.

PROGRAM LENGTH:
Five Semesters/20 Months/2268 Clock Hours.

CREDITS:
This program is 73 semester credit hours and offer a certificate upon completion.

CLASSES SCHEDULE:
Monday to Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm.

CLINICAL ROTATION:
Students are matched with the clinical site for externship based on academic performance, attendance and overall attitude. Students must get a B or better grade to qualify for hospital clinical sites. Clinical site placement is provided for students. Many sites accommodate more than one school therefore students are not allowed to request specific sites for clinical rotation. Students with access to clinical sites must inform the school in advance so that proper arrangements can be made with the site.

MORE ABOUT THE PROGRAM: An academic year is thirty weeks. The first year is dedicated primarily to lectures, lab assignments, and clinical rotation. The second and third years are dedicated to lectures, lab assignments and clinical rotation.

GRADUATION: To graduate from the program students must achieve a minimum of 2.0 (C) grade point or higher, attend more than 85 percent of course duration, and complete the program within 150 percent of the length of the program.

 GRADUATES CREDENTIALING:
All Graduates are encouraged to write the registry exams offered by CCI and ARDMS at their earliest convenience or within 30 days of graduation. Students are encouraged to write the SPI exam prior to clinical rotation. and the Adult Echo specialty registry exam immediately after graduation.
Registry certification is not a requirement by law in most states, however in recent years there has been a greater demand for registered technicians. Houston International College Cardiotech Ultrasound School pays close attention to industry trend, and prepares the graduates for acquiring registry credentials. All student are encouraged to write the CCI exam one month before graduation. Registry credentials are issued by CCI upon graduation.
PAYING FOR SCHOOL:
Federal Funds are available to students who qualify. Students who are citizens or legal residents of the United States may apply for Pell grant or a Federal loans. Applications are available on http://www.FAFSA.Ed.Gov. Direction on filling out the application is available on that website.
The school also offers a no interest monthly payment plan to qualified students who do not qualify for federal funding.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENT
Candidates must have the emotional and physical health sufficient to meet the demands of the position. Strength must be sufficient to lift some patients, move heavy equipment on wheels (up to approximately 500 lbs) and to move patients to and from wheelchairs and stretchers. The candidate must also be able to maintain prolonged arm positions necessary for scanning.
Additional standards related to the demands of the Echocardiogram Technicians are:
